A metabolite of histidine; decreases protein levels of IRS1, IRS2, and phosphorylated Akt and increases levels of phosphorylated p70S6K in primary mouse hepatocytes; impairs glucose tolerance in germ-free and conventionally raised mice at 500 and 100 µg/animal, respectively; plasma levels are increased in patients with type 2 diabetes
